Monday Watercolour: Azores sailing boat

p1160338

Re-starting my Monday watercolours…….

This is a traditional Azorean whaling boat, which I saw sailing in a regatta at Horta Sea Week in 2015.

Harbour Masters

Small Cornish harbour end of day
Tacking in from a choppy sea
Call the Master for a berth
Tie up, safe home
Steering through the Channel lanes
Ferries slam past, container vessels loom
Into Cherbourg calling with school French
Master chuckles, welcomes us in
Sliding slantwise into Plymouth
Fighting the wind all the way
Naval Frigate spinturns to miss us
Master reproachful to us each

Whaling Boat

p1160338

Whaling Boat

Cleaving through the waves
Slender, fragile
A wooden sailing boat
Races its kindred
In the regatta
Brought back to life and beauty
Restored to some use
But not the original fatal one
Man against beast
Hand launched harpoon
Against the deep diving leviathan
A dreadful trade
Forged in harsh necessity
Killing Whales and men
In this isolated archipelago
As the boat  turns into the wind
A bright Orange speeder passes close
Bouncing from wave to wave
Full of tourists
Out to hunt whales
With their cameras
