Walking east across the beach
boulders and rocks littered
as if discarded playthings.
Each contains treasures
some already spilt out
glistening traceries of lives past
revealed after aeons of hiding.

Transfixed by desert heat
we scan the cliff once more
new techniques allow us
to find smaller and smaller variations
display greater detail
and so, next to the dinosaur bones
we found the stone tablet, embossed
and also, carved ever so finely
a flower blossom
so not a counting of prey killed
as found before
debate rages, but preliminary analysis
indicates the planets oldest love poem

I’m delighted to tell you all that my poem ‘Fossil Poetry’ is published in the forthcoming issue 76 of Andromeda Spaceways Magazine.
Thank you Tom and Michelle!
A watercolour painting of the eastern end of Blue Anchor beach, near Exmoor. This is where we have collected many fine fossils. Painted in 2016 — the rocks have been battered by further winter storms and look a bit different this year.
