They begin in the dark
as do we all
waking from warmth blinking
Their first and best songs
slashing concealment
in defiance of the night

Re “Convict”. WordPress trashed your comment about your Grandmother’s fear of poverty and my unfinished reply ! Yes I certainly agree that fear of poverty was widespread through the working classes – and the unemployed. Many Australians and New Zealanders have convict ancestors, and their family members went to great lengths to hide them. At one of my earlier family history groups the man who told us about this boy was making some progress, and was asked to talk to us about researching him. I have not found any convicts in our family but it was still a very interesting.

Must be why I prefer to write very early! Savoring the defiance of first and best.

Oh, I’m bad at mornings — my sons reckon I wake up as a formless amoeba, and slowly evolve to something resembling humanity by lunchtime !

I heard them this morning – always glad to hear the Dawn Chorus, especially during the dark half of the year!

Oh, yes, they cheer me up in autumn as we slide into Xmas.

My favorite mornings are ones where the birds wake me. I get the same feeling from this poem as I do when I sit with them and my first cup of hot coffee. Lovely.
