Weather Forecaster

On the graveyard shift, we chase weather
parse our charts, work the numbers
issue warnings, brief pilots
wait for our relief to turn up
and then that blessed walk outside
into whatever we had been predicting

For just over one month many years ago, I worked shifts as a Weather Forecaster at Birmingham Airport…..

    1. Yes, indeed. I was a scientist at the UK Meteorological Office, and we were all trained as weather forecasters in case of war. We had equivalent military too.

It was amazing working through the data and writing the forecasts for real at the airport. I was on local radio each morning!

    1. Mathematics and data! One night there were two distinct possibilities, heavy snow, or a mild frost. A phone call from a forecaster in Ireland told us it was unexpectedly snowing there. We plumped for snow and got it right!
