Crafty eyes see the deer
Sunlit spotted still as death
An inward breath, a soft thanksgiving
And the arrow flies true
The sudden crash to the ground
Startles birds and woman
The berrying children cry out in joy
At the treat to come

I am fascinated by the lives of those who lived here in the Mesolithic –the early Stone Age. Here I describe a mother hunting meat for her children. Bows would have been a female weapon as well as a male one.
The Picture is a drawing from a cave in Spain.

You’ve imagined a life so different from our own and I think you’ve done it well. I’m also fascinated by early man and the art they’ve left behind. Always wanted to see the caves at Lascaux and Altamira, even if they’re reproductions. The painting here is so wonderful, both ancient and modern.

I want to see those paintings too — Britain has lots of stone age tommbs and circles, but very little art surviving from those times. Probably because it’s so damp here!
